Ed Uribe

Eric Velez“Multi-talented” barely begins to describe Toca’s artist Ed Uribe. Besides being a top performing and recording drummer and percussionist, Ed is an author, educator, composer, producer, and music technology consultant.

Ed’s drum and percussion performance credits include work with Ray Barretto, Paquito D’Rivera, Randy Brecker, Michel Camilo, Tania Maria, Dave Samuels, Claudio Roditi, Angela Bofill, Gary Burton, and the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabakin Orchestra, among many others. He is currently recording and producing a collection of works with Grammy award-winning composer and keyboardist Carlos Franzetti in a new trio that also features Brazilian bassist Nilson Matta.

As a producer, editor, and consultant, Ed has helped a “who’s who” of the music industry realize award-winning audio, video, and print projects. This list includes Tito Puente, Giovanni Hidalgo, Richie Garcia, Vinnie Colaiuta, Mike Portnoy, Johnny Rabb, Ed Thigpen, Horacio Hernandez, Marco Minneman, Jamie Haddad, Carmine Appice, and many others. Ed now operates his own studio—called Dancing Planet MediaWorks—where he works on the design and production of audio, video, print, web, and multimedia projects.

Ed established his reputation as an educator at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music, where he was a professor for seventeen years. There he developed the school’s Latin percussion program and wrote much of its curriculum. Ed was also key in bringing an electronic drumset and percussion technology program to the Berklee percussion department. In addition, he has twice been an artist-in-residence for the graduate school of the New England Conservatory of Music, and has been a guest educator at numerous universities and for trade organizations worldwide.

Living and touring extensively in Latin America and the Caribbean gave Ed a unique perspective on the music and culture of those regions. This perspective resulted in two books published by Warner Bros. Publications. The Essence of Afro-Cuban Percussion and Drum Set is considered the definitive text on that music. The book is used by educators and students worldwide, including the National Conservatory and other music academies in Cuba. The Essence of Brazilian Percussion and Drum Set is used in Brazil by the University of Sao Paolo and by the Biblioteca Virtual do Estudante Brasileiro (Brazil’s premiere online study site). Ed has also published numerous articles and educational materials in the fields of Latin music, music technology, and drumset education.
