Javier Fredes
Javier
Fredes has, for many years, been one of the premier percussionists in
Australia. Born in Chile in 1969, Javier immigrated to Australia at the
age of five. Fredes has studied intensively in Cuba under the tutelage
of the great, Jose Luis "Changuito" Quintana. He has also studied
rumba and performed with Pascual Izquierdo Rodriguez (Clave y Guaguanco)
and Freddy Martinez (Yoruba Andabo) in Havana, Cuba.
At the age of fourteen, he started playing with drummer Des McKenna,
appearing on a number of television shows, and touring with Blues singer,
Wendy Saddington. Since then, Javier has performed, recorded and toured
with many great Latin, Jazz, Dance and Pop artists including Los Cabrones,
Rumberos, Kate Ceberano, Renee Geyer and Red Fish Blue, which was nominated
for the Bell Award for Best Jazz Ensemble in 2003.
Javier has also performed at numerous festivals such as Womadelaide,
Wangarratta Jazz Festival, Sydney Jazz Festival, Port Fairy Music Festival,
Melbourne International Festival along with many other music events.
Javier is a distinguished percussion teacher and clinician giving special
workshops and performances in all cities throughout Australia. Currently
he is embarking on a national tour for Toca Percussion.
